Blind

By Madalyn Roth

We are blind.
While many can see,
Many cannot truly see.
I do have glasses,
But I am not a perfect being.
Blind.
I walk past my garden
And step on a stick that had fallen.
Crunches underneath my feet - *crack*
Rough bark intertwined with bugs
All kinds of bugs.
A ladybug inches towards the end of the stick.
Black polka-dots and red wings
I had never noticed how beautiful.
Blind.
I sat down in my booth at a restaurant.
Happy to fill my stomach
I looked out the window.
Waves crashing against the rocks
I had never noticed how beautiful.
Blind.
Bridge covers the waves
Cars flying by
Seagulls soaring amidst the brisk breeze
Sunshine creeping through the clouds overhead
Under the bridge sits a man.
No money
No food
Nothing
I sit in the restaurant.
He crouches hungry and alone.
Blind.
Everyone is eating with their friends at lunch.
Girl has no friends
Sits by herself - alone
Blind.
Money put in a tip jar
Nobody sees
Blind.
Sunset painting the sky
I had never noticed how beautiful.
Blind.
Many goes unnoticed.
Seeing is not seeing
We need to better focus
Ignorance is not perceiving
We are blind.
