How to Submit

The Basics

Illinois Central Review accepts creative work from students currently enrolled in one or more classes at Illinois Central College. Alumni, prospective students, and the general public cannot submit at this time. 

We publish twice a year: 

  • January (for work submitted during the fall semester) 
  • August (for work submitted during the spring semester)


Types of Work Accepted

Illinois Central Review considers the following submissions: 

  • short fiction (up to 2,500 words); limit 2 submissions per student
  • narrative nonfiction/personal essays (up to 2,500 words); limit 2 submissions per student
  • poetry; limit 6 submissions per student
  • visual art (drawings, paintings, photography, etc.); limit 3 submissions per student
  • performance art (dance, singing, theater, instrumental); limit 3 video submissions per student
  • Multimedia art; limit 3 submissions per student

NOTE: Students can submit work to multiple categories. 

Restrictions

Illinois Central Review will not consider fan fiction, work perceived as hate speech or derogatory toward a marginalized group of people, or work that is overtly religious or spiritual. We also do not publish academic essays. You are welcome to submit personal essays or narrative essays you wrote for a class to the narrative nonfiction category, though. 


Deadlines

Submissions are due by December 1 for the January issue and May 1 for the August issue.

Use the link to the form above to submit work for consideration. Use a different form for each submission. If you are submitting poetry, you can use one submission form for up to 3 poems. 

Submissions will be reviewed after the deadline. Contributors will be notified of their submission status by January 5, 2025.
